Week 40
Belonging Deeply
~2 min read · VII. Gravity
Promise
Stop looking for a tribe that will accept you and become the fire others are willing to die to stand beside.
Reset
Inhale for 6 seconds, pulling every person who ever abandoned you into your chest.
Hold for 8, letting their absence burn.
Exhale for 12, slow, like you’re breathing out the need for their approval.
Do it five times.
On the last exhale, say through your teeth: “I am the fire now.”
Reflection
I remember lying in that hospital bed after the crash.
Stiff.
Broken.
Unsure if I was going to make it—
but determined to do everything I could to recover.
Then the door opened.
In walked my youngest daughter.
It had been nearly a decade since we last spoke.
Distance,
a fractured relationship,
and my own disappearances into career and collapse had carved too
much space between us.
But in that moment,
none of that mattered.
She walked to my bedside,
sat down,
and rested her head gently against me.
No speeches.
No explanations.
Just presence.
A father and his daughter.
Reunited.
My body was wrecked.
My life felt unstable.
My future was uncertain.
But her head on my shoulder made something inside me settle:
[I’m still hers.
She’s still mine.
And we are not done.]
Belonging isn’t about perfection.
It’s about return.
It’s the quiet rethreading of something that once frayed.
It’s the recognition that love can arrive when you are least polished,
least triumphant,
least capable of pretending.
And in that moment,
I was glad I hit that guardrail.
Where has belonging already returned to you in small, quiet ways—and what would it mean to let yourself receive it fully?
Challenges
Start
Today, when you feel the urge to people-please or perform, stop. Look whoever is in front of you dead in the eye and say nothing. Let them feel the new temperature.
Stretch
Every day this week, do one thing that risks rejection: speak the unfiltered truth, refuse the fake smile, walk away from the conversation that bores you. Watch who steps closer and who steps back.
Deep-dive
This week, summon your real tribe. Send the message, make the call, post the declaration, host the gathering that says exactly who you are now (no softening, no apology). Make it impossible for the lukewarm to stay. Then stand in the silence after you hit send and feel who shows up willing to burn with you. Cut the rest without ceremony. Tell exactly one person who used to be in your circle but can’t handle the heat: “The fire is lit. You’re either in it or you’re out.” Close the door.
I do not join. I summon.
